It’s mind-blowing to think that the internet is such a recent invention that the man who created it is still alive, waving cheerfully to us all during the London 2012 opening ceremony. 

In fact, it’s only since the late 1980s when internet service providers began to show us what was possible that the internet as we know it started to pervade every aspect of our lives, ‘online’ becoming as much a part of how we function as face-to-face contact.  

Take the fundamental human urge to find a mate. Today, internet dating is one of the most popular ways to meet a new partner, with more than 1,400 sites in the UK alone, catering for people from all walks of life and interests. 

As with everything, there’s a right way to go about online dating — and a wrong way. A recent poll has identified some of the most unpopular and cringe-worthy phrases used on dating websites that are pretty much guaranteed to put off any prospective dates. Phrases such as: I’m just looking to make friends; I don’t take life too seriously; I work hard and play hard; I’m bubbly and the truly awful ‘Hello, is it me you’re looking for?’ all got the big thumbs down. 

So what’s the right way; online, or in the old-fashioned face-to-face way? Either way, starting a new relationship is all about scoping each other out to see if there’s compatibility and looking for that promising spark that says ‘potentially, we have a future together’. 

This applies to partnerships in the business world too; you’re looking for shared purpose, a good match of skill supply and demand, and a sense that you’d achieve greater success together than apart. 

Great relationships are founded on mutual understanding and clear insight into what makes each of us tick. When we start to build a new working relationship we kick-start the process by trying to get under the skin of your business so we can identify things such as your core values as well as your particular needs and wants. Only then can we make recommendations or suggest ideas.
