Around the world in 80 cups

We’re still a nation of avid tea drinkers, but it’s fair to say we Brits have fallen in love with coffee. From the humble Americano to the skinny vanilla soya latte with an extra shot, everyone’s got their favourite. Whether we enjoy it as early morning wake up or an after dinner refreshment, coffee has become a staple in most of our lives.

But, no matter how seriously we take our brew, we might be missing a trick when it comes to our experimentation with the coffee bean. All over the world, cultures have put their own unique stamp on the beverage, so we thought we’d give you a whirlwind tour of the coffee loving parts of the globe.

We’ll start in the icy wilds of Scandinavia where, in central-eastern Finland, a cheese called juustoleipä is served with coffee. After cutting the cheese into small chunks, you place it at the bottom of the cup, and pour the coffee on top. Once you’ve drunk the coffee, you can then eat the cheese with a spoon.

Alternatively, if you find yourself in the souks (open-air marketplaces) of Marrakesh, don’t miss the chance to taste a Café des épices. It’s a blend of spices, sesame seeds, black pepper and nutmeg from the market, mixed with coffee beans to make a potent and aromatic hot drink.

Over in Ethiopia, you can try a Buna. This isn’t only a drink, but a whole ceremony which involves roasting and grinding the beans before brewing, straining and then serving the coffee. Also, an invitation to attend a Buna coffee ceremony is considered a mark of friendship or respect.

It’s fascinating to see how different people around the world use such similar ingredients, yet incorporate rituals to show that coffee is more than just a drink; it’s a significant part of culture, no matter where you are in the world.
