WE HUMANS ARE AN INCREDIBLY RESOURCEFUL SPECIES BUT WE’RE OFTEN SO BUSY DEPLORING THE MESS WE’VE MADE OF EVERYTHING THAT WE FORGET TO CELEBRATE THE STUFF WE DO REALLY WELL. AND ONE OF THE THINGS WE REALLY EXCEL AT IS ADAPTING TO NEW SITUATIONS AND TURNING CHALLENGING EVENTS INTO OPPORTUNITIES.
Take farming for instance. We think of producers and growers as rooted in the countryside, living in rural communities with land aplenty. But increasingly, farming doesn’t just happen in the country.
New life is springing up from urban landscapes previously blighted by decay. From allotments to city farms to community growing projects, city dwellers are doing it for themselves and they’re doing it in the shadow of railways, factories and industrial estates.
The accepted picture of Detroit, home of General Motors and icon of the American auto industry, is of a silent and deserted city, long left behind by prosperity; slowly spiralling into decay. Well, not quite. New growing projects are springing up right across the city, and its reputation as an urban farming community is spreading far and wide. In this country we’re seeing the same thing — Middlesbrough, Bristol and Dagenham are just some examples. And who’d have thought Havana would be getting a new name for itself as an organic farming centre of excellence?
Africa is revealing some new and exciting flavours too, leading the ever-resourceful locals to put their thinking caps on and go exploring. Think baobab chilli jam, curry ketchup and maringa — just some of the flavours to emerge more recently from this amazing continent.
It seems that natural resourcefulness is winning through.
