The humble heroes of health

It’s a warm summer morning and you take a long stroll in the country. As you make your way through green fields, bordered by wild flowers and vibrant hedgerows, your week’s worries drift away. Taking a break, you lounge in the long grass and pour a cupful of something hot out of your trusty flask. All you need now is something sweet to perfect this idyllic Great British summertime moment. And there, nestled in the hedge, is a bunch of plump blackberries ripe for the picking.

Blackberries make a great snack on the move and are one of the stars of the UK’s berry season. That’s why we’ve decided to make them the next entry in our berry-licious blog series.

Close to home

From summer through to early autumn, fresh blackberries can be found all over the UK. They’re in hedges, parks, even your back garden. And they’re as nutritious and delicious as they are ubiquitous.

Here are just a few of the blackberry’s many qualities:
• Blackberries are in season from around July to October so you have plenty of time to fill those punnets. And blackberries freeze well, so if you pick enough you can use them through winter too.

• As well as antioxidants, blackberries are a great source of vitamins C, E and K, along with manganese — meaning they’re great for your skin, bones and immune system.

• With large amounts of natural fibres, blackberries aid digestion.

Flexible fruits

And let’s not forget one other important blackberry fact — they taste fantastic. You can eat them fresh or combine them into one of these mouth-watering recipes:

• Combine with grilled nectarines to make a summery salsa that goes well with cumin-rubbed chicken.

• Blend them with other seasonal berries to create healthy, summery smoothies.

• Mix your blackberries with some apple to whip up a simple, tasty crumble that will make your taste buds tingle.

Healthy choices are easier to make when they’re delicious too. That’s why we always bring your people the best of both worlds — meals made from ingredients we know will taste great and boost your people’s health and wellbeing.
