The crème de la(tte) crème

A teddy bears face on top of a latte.

Meet Pari Nepal, our very own barista extraordinaire. His passion for coffee is as contagious as his drinks are delicious…

Know your arabica from your robusta?

Most of us are happy with our coffee as long as it’s hot and caffeinated. But for some people, coffee is far more than just a beverage — it’s a science and an art.

Pari Nepal is one of those people.

Pari is a barista, working at our Café Dulluci coffee shop in Griffin House, London. And it’s here that he brings his passion for crafting creative, delicious coffee to his customers.

Next-level coffee skills

With eight years of practice and training under his belt, as well as a gold medal from the TUCO competition 2015, Pari’s a master of latte art and coffee science. His signature teddy bear (or the traditional heart, rosetta or tulip, if that’s what you prefer) adorns the top of every latte that Pari serves.

But that’s just what you see on the surface. Underneath the latte art is where Pari’s expertise really shines. Drawing on his experience and practice, Pari knows exactly how hot to make the milk, how fine to grind the coffee, and how long to filter the hot water through the coffee. Pari brings all these disparate elements together to make a cuppa joe that would be the envy of any hipster coffee house.

The London Latte Art Smackdown

Last year, Pari’s prodigious skills took him to another national competition — The London Latte Art Smackdown. Featuring the best baristas that the country has to offer, taking part in the Smackdown was a huge deal for Pari.

Although he didn’t make it to the final of the event, just taking part has been a big step in Pari’s career — and he’ll be back this year for another stab at the top spot.

Not to mention the fact that Pari was one of the first Compass Group baristas to take part in such a competition — which is an achievement in and of itself.

Wanting to get some help with our own coffee-crafting skills, we asked Pari for some top latte-art tips. His answer: always use fresh milk (re-using hot milk won’t give you the right consistency or taste as good) and make sure you only steam as much milk as you need.

Great people

Pari is just one of the many people we employ who are passionate about what they do. And it’s people like him that make our service the success that it is.

We’ll be taking a look at the achievements of more of our great people over the coming months, so make sure to keep an eye out.

And if you ever fancy a fantastic latte, you know who to look for.
