Know Your Food
IN APRIL 2011 WE ANNOUNCED A SERIES OF PLEDGES IN SUPPORT OF THE GOVERNMENT’S RESPONSIBILITY DEAL, WORKING ALONGSIDE SUPERMARKETS AND HIGH STREET RESTAURANTS TO HELP IMPROVE THE NATION'S HEALTH.
These pledges include a commitment to providing calorie labelling for food and drink, eliminating artificial trans fats in the food we serve, and further reducing salt levels in our products and recipes, something we have been doing successfully for a number of years.
Through these pledges to the government, we are championing health and wellbeing in our industry and have launched a dedicated programme – Know Your Food – focused on providing customers with the information they need to make an informed choice about the food they are eating, and giving them choices that taste great.
This way, we also provide a solution to growing client concern around the welfare of their employees and the cost of absenteeism due to health/diet-related issues.
We have analysed hundreds of recipes to provide nutrition information in the form of Guideline Daily Amounts (GDAs), which shows the salt, sugar, fat and saturated fat, as well as calorie content.
Working with our suppliers, thousands of product specifications have been reviewed and we are developing innovative solutions to make it easier for our customers to maintain a balanced diet.
For example, decreasing our salt sachets by 25% - an industry first - means a decrease of nearly 8 tonnes of salt per annum. By replacing butter with Flora Buttery in a number of our core recipes we’ll be eliminating up to 240 million calories and almost 100 tonnes of saturated fat – the weight of a blue whale – from our food.
We have also introduced 1% milk, a healthier alternative to its semi-skimmed counterpart. 1% milk contains 41% less total and saturated fat than standard semi-skimmed milk and has higher calcium content.
To ensure our teams have the right skills and knowledge to roll out the health and wellbeing programme, we have developed a series of coaching cards for our frontline teams, supported by an E-learning video.
